Besseggen is, for good reason, one of Norway's most famous mountain hikes. The trek offers a fantastic view over Gjende and the surrounding mountain areas. On good-weather days the ridge can get crowded, so if you have the chance to hike it outside the busiest periods, that's worth considering.
Due to high visitor numbers, the trail up from Memurubu was reinforced with steps to limit further erosion. The staircases are in the lower section, around where the trail breaks through the tree line, as well as somewhat higher up on the steepest stretches. These staircases are split into separate sections, and their placement on the map is not entirely accurate.
Most people who hike Besseggen choose to take the boat in to Memurubu from Gjendesheim. The return trip over Besseggen is about 15 km and 1,150 meters of elevation gain.
