Before the Trollstigen road opened in 1936, Kløvstien was the only route up and down the mountain.

Staircase facts
Kløvstien is the old route that connected Romsdalen and Sunnmøre over land before Trollstigen opened in 1936. The path starts in Isterdalen and climbs steeply up the mountainside. Steep sections today have chains and stairs to make the path more accessible. Sherpas built staircases in the section just below Stigfossbrua in 2016.
The hike from Trollstigfoten is about 2.3 km and 430 meters of elevation gain, one way.
