Staircase facts
We've chosen to include some staircases that aren't "classic sherpa staircases", since wood and metal staircases can obviously serve the same purpose — making it easier for people to get up into the mountains. Vegatrappa and Midnattsoltrappa are good examples of staircases that do the same job as a "classic sherpa staircase", just in wood.
This site is meant as an overview of all the longer hiking staircases in Norway, not just stone staircases built by sherpas from Nepal.
The path from Oldedalen across to Stardalen was an old travel route. Before 1935, the path started further north in the valley, up by Myklebust. The path used today was rerouted in 1935 after major work building staircases and laying chains in exposed places. In 2014 and 2015 the trail was improved with new staircases, culverts, widening of the path, and wire. It's not a continuous staircase, but several short sections. In total, staircases/flagstones are said to have been built over about 200m, and 40 meters of wire were installed. For many, the highlight is the 1935 staircase that runs through the Gløvre gorge.
