Stegane ved Hummelvatnet

Stegane is located near Matre in Masfjorden municipality. Stegane leads steeply up to Hummelvatnet.

In the 1700s, when people needed to go down to the village from Kringlebotn, rope ladders were used. When they then wanted to go back up, it's said that they pulled the ladder up after them to keep uninvited guests away. The ladder up from Hummelfossen was destroyed by a landslide in 1853, and the residents of Kringlebotn applied to the municipality for funds for repairs. At most, up to about 40 people are said to have lived in Kringlebotn, of whom 24 are said to have been children. In 1924, the last permanent resident is said to have moved out. In 1945, the farm buildings in Kringlebotn were burned down by the Germans.

In 1993, two construction workers were assigned to repair Kringlebotnstigen. They built up stone staircases and arranged the natural stone to provide an easier route up the mountainside. It's uncertain how many steps there are and how long the staircase is. Tips are appreciated.

The round trip to the dam is about 1.2 km and 200 meters of elevation gain.
